美國之音在二次大戰期間隸屬於戰時的對外新聞局。1945年改組，隸屬於美國國務院的國際新聞署，中文部也從舊金山市遷往紐約市。在紐約期間，中文部每天廣播八小時，以五種中國方言播音，一度還包括蒙語。美國之音中文部1994年9月開播以衛星頻道和廣播同步播出的華語電視節目，1999年7月開辦美國之音中文網。
